Overview

Before the time of Newton the subject of Physics was called natural philosophy. Now physics is concerned with all aspects of nature, covering the behavior of objects under the action of forces (basically the study of how matter moves around and interacts with other matter in Space). Of the four known forces, gravitational and electromagnetic are long range (act across the universe), and Strong and Weak nuclear forces are short range (10^-15m) and are used to explain nuclear interactions.
The aim of physics is to formulate the most simple principles that bring together and explain all observed phenomena as well as predict previously unobserved ones.
The oldest branch of Physics is Newton's Mechanics. Then comes the science of Heat or Thermodynamics. The two previously unrelated branches of Electricity and Magnetism have now been united under Electromagnetism.
Einstein tried to unite the previously separate concepts of Space, Time, Matter and Gravity into a unified field theory of matter without success.
Currently physics is largely founded on concepts of particles which generate fields that act on other particles in Space-Time. However, there are still numerous problems with this conception (e.g. Particle / Wave Duality of Light and Matter) and it is now generally accepted that these concepts are merely logical tools of thought (logical positivism). The current postmodern view is that reality itself cannot be described in terms of discrete particles and continuous fields, and it is inferred that we can never directly describe reality. However, it is still too early to come to such conclusions, only time will tell if there is a better language available for describing physical reality. And this is part of the reason why this subject of physics is so fascinating!
