Wildlife viewing involves watching wildlife as a recreational activity. It includes birdwatching or other nature study, the viewing or photography of natural scenery or sightseeing.

More than 66 million people viewed wildlife during 2003 and many public land recreation areas offer a setting for viewing and photographing creatures in their natural habitats. Opportunities range from observing habits of the endangered Nene or Hawaiian Goose at Volcano National Park to admiring the power and grace of grizzly bears at state parks in Alaska. Entry fees, licensing and seasonal restrictions vary from site to site.

Birding

Birding, or bird-watching as it is sometimes known, is the observation of birds. Very keen birders will try to find and observe a variety of different species of birds.

Most bird-watching is done during the morning and during fall or autumn. Birds will usually hunt during the morning, so this is the time that they are more active. Many birds migrate during spring and fall or autumn, so this is the time when most birds congregate together for nesting.

Rules and Guidelines

Avoid viewing wildlife from positions where access is not permitted and avoid littering.

The United States Federal Government says birdwatchers and other wildlife viewers should:
- check with local park, forest, or public lands agents to see what precautions need to be taken in regard to seasonal restrictions; should not feed the local wildlife.
- take precautions against birdwatching or viewing wildlife in an area that may be dangerous in the case of sudden flash floods.
- check with local rangers to find a safe and legal viewing area; should be courteous to other campers and recreationists.
- bring along extra safety items such as water, flashlights, maps, and a cellphone or radio.
